Week 12: The little things always end up bigger…

…who thought hinges and a small lock would mean such detailed work!?

The detail work of mortising in the hinges, detail and care are the key.
And the result shows, when the hinge fits perfectly…now don’t forget to file the screws a bit so they don’t come thru the case. 🙂
And the hinges were just the warm-up act, mortising in the lock is a bit more tricky, especially avoiding blowing out the back of the door stile.
But it all pays off when the lock fits perfectly…
…because the touch of a lock and hinges perfectly set in just makes all the difference! 🙂
Look at the lock and key, almost looks like I knew what I was doing! 🙂

Monday was about the ongoing work scraping, sanding and doing final spokeshave work on the legs. Not sexy work, but there is a lot to be learned and I certainly appreciated that aspect!

Tuesday was all about installing the hinges and finish sanding the legs to be ready for glue-up.

Wednesday was really about installing the lock and striker plate. And you might think it wouldn’t take the better part of a day, but alas it did. I find a certain joy in this detailed work, of course I might feel different if I ruined the piece. 🙂

Nick brought in this old school drill for the delicate work of drilling a hole thru the middle of the top, back to middle. Why you ask? To run the wiring for the light to be installed inside the cabinet. 🙂
The drilling, midway thru…stay parallel, don’t want to pop out somewhere unplanned!!
And drill the hole in the top, with luck they will meet! Spoiler: They did and it looks perfect! 😮
Stand ready for glue-up!
And glued up and ready to dry. You can see the wet spots where I cleaned up glue squeeze out before it set, as much easier to clean up now.

Thursday was a day of sanding, sanding and more sanding. By the way, in case folks are wondering, this is all hand sanding. And it is 150, 180, and then 220 for each surface.

With the legs, there were some early rounds of 100 grit, but that was the only exception. A very zen day. Plus I put another coat of Osmo on the cabinet, and milled up the back panels of the case.

This was also the day I did the install for the wiring of the light I plan to install in the upper ceiling of the cabinet. So doing some careful drilling thru the middle of the top without a fail…after all, I was drilling thru the thickness of the top!

Friday was the final coat of Osmo for cabinet and then final finish sanding and refining aprons and legs. Because it was glu-up day! And I did the final milling for the lower shelf and splitter. Next week, will be final finish and the marquetry of the lower shelf that sits between the legs…yikes!
